Negotiations

The Maritime Employers Association is appointed as the representative to the member companies in accordance with Section 34 of the Canada Labour Code. Section 34 deals with the longshoring industry and allows for employees of two or more employers to have jurisdiction on the longshoring work within a determined geographical sector. Section 34(3) of the Code specifies that the employers must name a representative who will act on their behalf and carry out the duties and responsibilities of an employer. Therefore, on its members’ behalf, the association is mandated to negotiate and administer the collective agreements, which covers over 1,000 employees, in the Ports of Montreal, Trois-Rivières/Bécancour, Toronto and Hamilton.
